61-year old Amiran is a driver, having been employed on the cargo transport in Russian during years, having high salary and earning sufficient income for the family. Though, later as the result was drug-addiction has changed everything. He returned to Georgia, where due to his bad habit, family conflict became were frequent, which was also added by a heavy disease of his son. For covering his medical expenses he was forced to sell the house, remaining homeless, though failing to save his son’s life.
The family is socially unprotected. Zurab (name is conditional) has a wife and two minor children. For searching incomes for the family he has left for Turkey, though due to health state he failed to work physically and returned back home. His health problem started during his imprisonment period. After being released from prison, he has undergone treatment and became healthier, though he still has difficult with physical work, therefore he cannot perform all types of work.
Project for supporting former inmates has been implemented in four regions of Georgia more than a year. Former inmates, inmates’ families and probationers are applying rehabilitation service. Huge interest and involvement of beneficiaries towards employment and self-employment programs is expressed in the fact that it considers supporting launching of the enterprises through their employment in various private companies and their own companies with small grants.

Visiting the Todua Family in Samegrelo a head of the family met in his usual style, observing bee hives, organizing them and working silently, as if communicating with the insects. As he noticed the guests he gave a business and invited us for introducing with his favorite activity.

42 year-old Koba Pipia is living together with the family in the village Chkhvaleri, Tsalenjikha. He has old-aged parents and two sons. He started working on wooden items after graduation from school together with grandfather, therefore he has not mastered any profession so far. Currently, being unemployed with production and realization of wooden items
After release from prison they have arranged a small workshop, having purchased working tools and returning to the old business. With the support of Institute of Democracy project on Strengthening Former Inmates they purchased enamel oven.
Why do former inmates choose self-employment and why do the individuals released from custody have difficulty in getting employed?
There are many preventative factor, the social worker working on rehabilitation and re-socialization of the former inmates say that they have difficulty to employ former inmates either in state or non-state sector.
