Construction works ongoing on the skiing resort Goderdzi are conducted at the expense of the private property of the local population. Residential houses, other buildings and premises and land plots on the construction areas of the skiing resort are owned by the families, being officially granted in the form of a private property in 1998. Though these families, due to inexperience and lack of necessary resources, did not register their property in the Public Register (immovable property did not require registration in Public Register for that period).
According to the Decree by the Government of Georgia of October 21, 2011, the environs of Goderdzi Pass were totally registered as the state property, whereas later passed to the Government of Ajara Autonomous Republic despite the fact that tenths of houses and land plots were covered by the above-mentioned territory. These citizens failed to register existing and documentally owned property with owner’s rights due to the reason that the property belonged to the state.
The Institute of Democracy provides advocacy for 21 families.
