Elderly in Georgia

Elderly in Georgia

Ismail Babu (Grandpa) has found a new home at St. Ekaterina’s Elderly House. Previously Grandpa was isolated from family and society, now he enjoys family warmth, spiritual calmness and support. He is surrounded by many “family members” and friends.
The Institute of Democracy brought new hope to Grandpa, and worked on finding him shelter. With the support of Health and Social Care Service of Batumi City Hall and St. Ekaterina’s, Grandpa was placed at Elderly House.
According to the 92-year old elderly man, he worked consciously and honestly during his lifetime and always tried to do his best. After his wife’s death, however, he became vulnerable, isolated and lost touch with friends and family.
Grandpa’s first day in the new environment started well. He met his old neighbor Lida whom he hadn’t seen for years; they enjoyed talking together and recalled old times. Grandpa has also found a new friend in another resident, Mr. Jemal. They are supporting one another in dealing with life’s challenges: “Don’t worry, no matter what happens things will go well”.
The Institute of Democracy supports individuals subjected to age discrimination, abuse and neglect. Within the project frame “Campaign for protecting the rights and strengthening of the Elderly” the Institute of Democracy, in cooperation with their partner organizations (“Deserving Old Age” and “Guria Agro Business Center”), provides assistance for elderly citizens as follows: family income (Launching a Small Family Business), healthcare issues, elderly abuse, educational training seminars, cultural-educational events, elderly clubs, conferences and discussions, legislative action and development of elderly policy legislation.
